As a...I like the "viral spread" argument. As a marginal note: it seems that prof. Feynman himself was also struggling with this question.<br />In the preface to his "Lectures on physics" he takes a rather pessimistic/realistic viewpoint: "The power of instruction is seldom of much efficacy except in those happy dispositions where it is almost superfluous" (quoting Gibbons). <br />Talking about the complementary interplay of his research and teaching he seems much more convinced of "the point" (e.g. see the exerpt from "Surely you're joking, mr.
